I am keen on working with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) after completing my B.Com degree and final CA exam next year. Please advise.
Anjali Jain,
Ahmedabad

You can apply for entry into the RBI’s officers’ cadre in Grade ‘B’ (direct recruitment). To qualify you need to be between 21-30 years of age, possess a first or second class postgraduate degree with a minimum of 55 percent or an equivalent grade or chartered/cost accountant/company secretary qualification with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Selection is through a written exam and personal interview. The entrance exam comprises two phases: Phase 1 (objective test) is of three hours duration and tests general awareness, English language, quantitative aptitude and reasoning skills. Phase 2 (descriptive test) is for successful Phase 1 candidates. The syllabus is available on www.rbi.org.in.

I’m an engineering graduate employed in a blue-chip company. Please advise which B-schools offer a part-time Master’s programme in management studies.
Neerja Shah,
Mumbai

Most prominent business schools offering the two-year full-time MMS degree (University of Mumbai) also offer a three-year part-time MMS programme. The downside is that the part-time MMS degree programme does not offer campus placements.

What are my career prospects if I sign up for a BMM (bachelor in mass media) degree after completing my Plus Two (science) next year? Would you recommend some other study options?
Sridhar Rao,
Chennai

There’s nothing wrong in opting for a BMM degree after Plus Two (science), provided you are interested in a career in journalism or advertising and possess strong communication skills with English proficiency. Other options apart from the obvious engineering and medical science courses, are agriculture and allied degree programmes (visit www.mkcl.ws/agri), which may also include home science, optometry, medical laboratory techno-logy as well as law, hotel management, design/fine arts.

I’m in class XII (science) and wish to qualify as a scientist. Please advise.
Rahul Chatterjee,
Kolkata

To pursue a career in science research you need to do an M.Sc after completing B.Sc. Alternatively you could enrol in a five-year integrated M.Sc programme after completing class XII. Follow this up with a Ph D to ensure your long-term career prospects are bright. The five-year integrated M.Sc programme is offered by the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), at Bhopal (www.iiser bhopal.ac.in), Kolkata (www.iiserkolkata. ac.in), Mohali (www.iisermohali.ac.in) and Thiruvanathapuram (www.iisertvm. ac.in); National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneshwar (http://niser.ac.in/NEST); Indian Institute of Space and Technology, Thiruvanathapuram (www.iist.ac.in); National Institute of Technology, Suratkal (www.svnit.ac.in); some of the IITs and a few universities.

Do any of the IITs offer M.Tech through correspondence?
Suresh Nair,
Trivandrum

The IITs and other prominent engineering colleges do not offer M.Tech programmes through the distance learning mode. Besides, correspondence degrees don’t offer placement opportunities. If you want to add value to your resumé, opt for a full-time M.Tech. Alternatively sign up for a Ph D after completion of your M.Sc programme.

Please suggest some well-known institutes offering training in product design. I’ll be graduating from the J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai next year.

I’m keen on qualifying as a company secretary (CS). Does CS offer good career prospects? I’ll be completing my B.Com degree next year.
Nikhil Vaz,
Panjim

This is a rewarding career. Qualified company secretaries are usually snapped up by corporates, government departments and also have the option of independent practice. They offer arbitration and conciliation, corporate laws advisory and representation services. Success in the profession is related to an individual’s capabilities, awareness of emerging possibilities and constant updating of skills and knowledge. I recommend you pursue CS simultaneously with a law degree programme. This combination will greatly enhance your career prospects.
