Imminent urban armageddon

  • Urban population set to almost double in 20 years
  • Of the current urban population of 350 million, 70 million are poor
  • India’s urban population will increase by 300 million in 30 years
  • In 2031, three of the ten largest mega-cities in the world will be in India — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata
  • 70 other cities will host populations of over 1 million
  • 70 percent of new employment will be generated in cities in 2030
  • Number of urban middle class households will increase from 22 million currently to 91 million in 20 years
  • Currently India has only 21,000 people in top urban management, of whom less than 5 percent are trained in urban practice
  • Another 14,000 people are in civic middle management, of whom only 20 percent are trained.
